Greeting neighbors and trust you all had a great Memorial Day weekend!
Been a lot of good things going on in the hood:
- Our retired Navy Master Chief and Master Beer Brewer, Donn Haviland put a team of about 10 neighbors together and demoed the north wall of our entrance which had deteriorated. The wall was down in an hour and the rubble was picked up the next day. We celebrated the event after with several cold ones. Donn has also arranged for a contractor to repair the stucco work. I love these kind of team projects because it builds camaraderie and in this case we saved $3,000, making our esteemed Treasurer Patti Millage smile. We also repaired some sprinkler heads and ground lighting in the front entrance. Thanks to Donn and all who participated.
- Our next group project will be to clean up and paint our signage and posts. Stay tuned for more.
- We had a main irrigation line burst in the front area and was repaired by Donn and Tom Gagne. Master Chief Donn also fixed a pothole on HPT.
- Hats off to Erin Connell & Peter Umberger for decorating our front entrance with American Flags in celebration of our Memorial Day Weekend.
- Big shout out also to Inge & Russ Jahn who decorated our front entrance island with some clean up, trimming and new flower plantings.
- IQ Fiber has completed their high speed fiber optic network cable installation. They have been tested and we just received notice they are ready hook up the homes that want that service. Donn did a great job in managing this project. We had a few bumps but overall IQ did a good job following up on the issues we had.
- We have contracted Paul Manning to trim some over hanging tree branches in our west retention pond.
- We are investigating what appears to be a storm sewer issue by the front entrance and will keep you posted on what we find out about the fix.
- Another Hats Off to Herman and Joanna Wood for painting our MSC/HPT STOP signs with reflective paint. Not an easy task.
- Linnea Tighe and Tom Gagne organized our annual garage sale again this year. Based on our neighborhood response and lots of visitor traffic, it was very successful. Yani left for a volunteer gig leaving me to man our driveway for 5 hours. I put $23 in my wallet, but many others increased their retirement accounts a lot : )
- Our great “Webmaster” Rich Barber, who for years has worked on our Website and and community communications, has been looking for someone to help out and eventually take over this important work. Herman Wood (resident Bourbon expert) has volunteered for the task. Herman’s educational background brings excellent skills to this transition and thank you sir for stepping up on this.
- Amelia Island is blessed with a beautiful tree canopy and we have several neighbors who want to keep it that way. “Amelia Tree Conservancy” is leading the charge on this and we have several residents who are deeply involved that you may not know about. Margarette Kirkland is past president of this group, and Russel Jahn and Wende Burdick are also board members. Although Margarette has recently resigned from the Tree Conservatory, she is starting a new group called “Conserve Nassau”. Thanks to these neighbors for their great volunteer work in these important causes.
- Congratulations to Matt & Tarla Millar on their son’s graduation from FBHS. Tanner is off to college in North Georgia with his well tuned golf clubs. They also had one hell of a party to celebrate this life passage. Congrats Tanner!
- I have calculated that our Mayor Charlie Sciarini over the years has supplied over 5,000 dog treats in his “doggie heaven” driveway. Perhaps a national HOA record? Happy Dogs – Happy Hood and a big thanks to Charlie!
- Our new neighbors – Howard and Janet Fishbein, 1371 MSC – didn’t waste any time getting involved in our island community. Howard has started a Senior Softball League and it is up and running with great participation. Bats are swinging at 9 AM Sunday mornings at Ybor Alvarez Sports Complex. Spring season is ending and will start again in the fall. If interested contact Howard at 443-812-5710.
- Our next quarterly BOD meeting is scheduled for July 8th.
LOVE THY NEIGHBOR
Best regards,
Bob Allison
